I saw this quote recently and it stayed with me. Written by Rumi in the 13th century, the sentiment is more profound than ever.

I’m deeply saddened by the destruction from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. I see images of what was once a home, people who have lost everything they had, and animals of all types struggling to survive. My heart breaks with each new image I encounter.

But I’ve also seen acts of incredible bravery and compassion. First responders who work tirelessly to make sure people and animals were taken to a safe place, stories of people being kind to each other during the most devasting event in their lives, and everyday heroes who came from hundreds of miles away to do whatever they could to help.

It’s these stories and images that give me hope, for if we show love for our fellow beings, we find strength in each other and courage to move forward.

This quote stirred my soul. Love is the bridge; we often have to look hard within ourselves and our surroundings, but it’s there. My prayers are filled with hope and love for those who were in the path of these two storms, because the road ahead is long. It’s a time for all of us to appreciate this precious gift of life, and to be generous in any way we can by supporting local organizations that will help those affected rebuild their lives and communities.

Be well,
Deb

P.S. I must confess that I know very little about Rumi, but I have a book of his life and poetry that’s been sitting on my dresser for years. (A recommendation from my therapist, a wise man that I trust completely.) From time to time, I’ve picked it up…and just as quickly put it back down. This may be the catalyst I need to finally read it. Do you have a book that you’ve been holding on to, but never read?
